Completed extensive testing, received new order, and expanded product offering; strong commercial momentum for new 2.3MW direct drive wind turbine
BARRE, VT, USA – May 23, 2011 – Northern Power Systems, Inc. (www.northernpower.com), a manufacturer of next-generation permanent magnet direct drive (PM/DD) wind turbines, is pleased to announce strong commercial momentum for its new 2.3 MW PM/DD wind turbine, the “NPS 2.3”. Following initial introduction of the NPS 2.3 at the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) annual conference in March, the Company has now successfully completed extensive testing of the NPS 2.3, received a second order and introduced a new 100 meter rotor option. The NPS 2.3 will see its North American launch today at the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) WINDPOWER 2011 conference.
The NPS 2.3 is the largest PM/DD wind turbine in commercial operation in North America today. It incorporates advanced PM/DD technology that is the result of more than 10 years of research and development at Northern Power Systems. The NPS 2.3 has now successfully completed six months of the most extensive dynamometer testing in the history of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The initial NPS 2.3 prototype turbine has been in commercial operation in Michigan since January 2011.
The Company is currently in active negotiations with numerous customers for additional NPS 2.3 orders and has recently closed its second order, with installation planned to occur in the summer of 2011. Northern Power Systems is also pleased to announce the introduction of a 100 meter rotor to optimize energy capture at low-wind sites. This option is expected to be available for delivery to customers in 2012.
