Reactive Power Compensation

Reactive power compensation: Using a Northern Power Systems NPS 100 or NPS 60 to manage power factor Electrical systems using alternating current are subject to situations where voltage and current get out of step with each other… they get “out of phase.” When voltage and current are out of phase, the power produced – the product of voltage times current – is affected. Apparent power, what is metered and what we typically pay for, is composed of real power, that provides useful work, and reactive […]

Foundation Overview for the NPS 100

The design of the foundation for a Northern Power® 100 wind turbine (NPS™ 100) at a specific site is the responsibility of the project developer. Because soil conditions can vary dramatically from installation to installation, the project developer must conduct a geotechnical investigation at each site to determine what conditions exist. Those conditions must be taken into account by a competent structural engineer, licensed to practice in the jurisdiction of the site, in his design. The loads that are imposed on the foundation are defined […]

Energy Production Estimating

Estimating the amount of energy a wind turbine will generate in a year is a key factor in determining the viability of any wind development project. To do that responsibly, it is important to understand wind characteristics, especially its variable nature. Equally important, however, is an understanding of site and operational issues that affect the ultimate, bottom-line net usable energy production from a wind turbine installation. Wind Characteristics When it comes to generating electricity, the single most important characteristic of wind is its speed. A […]
